Mr Mindless, when are you coming up here with that bad boy? You have to at least show us some pics and videos of her in action.
Mr. Mindless

I gotta wait for one of your trips up north when I have time and money to go.  I don't do the mud thing....

Here's a trip writeup from my last weekend at Rausch Creek.  It was a frustrating trip for me....  Little stupid bugs.

Where was everyone?  No, not you guys, I knew you didn't have your big girl panties and couldn't come, but NOBODY was there.  I've never seen the park so empty.  I think probably 50 rigs at most, maybe more like 30.  I'm sure Mike would know better but man, it was dead.

I spent all goddamn day Saturday like this

Here's a quick rundown:

Attendees were:
CJ5 locked both ends on 35s, spring under
TJ on 33s, open/limited
TJ on 38s, open 30/Detroit 35, 6" shortarm 4" BL.  bought built, owned for 10 days so far
ZJ on 35s, locked, shortarm
Dakota on 40s, welded/locked, broken as usual Rolling Eyes

Friday I lead and we went up to the right of Jotter, up New Trail, across the off camber stuff to the right at the top there, I went through the huge bowl on 1C and then across the mounds in the rain.  scary but no issues.  still loving the MT/Rs.  We took a new trail across the middle of the far ridge on the west side, J1 I think it is?  not on the maps yet,  really scenic, I like it even though it's green.  loaded up with firewood, went down 16 towards rock creek planning on going out 13a.  I was going to play in the creek for a bit and tried to get down Otter's Trail without any spotting.  bad move.  my rear brake and vent tube lines were hanging low and were pinched by a rock against the axle and both cut and I smashed my rear diff cover enough to gouge a 1/2" hole in it.  vice gripped the brake line, went back up the muddy blue next to 16 and out.

I peened over the leak and slowed it down enough to brake clean and RTV.  Added almost half a gallon of 75w90 and went for brake parts in Minersville Saturday AM.  bought the stock '96 F250 rear line I thought I needed, got to the park, and found after it was all apart that I was wrong.  that rear line has a 3/8 and a 5/16 brake fitting in it, my lines are both 3/18.  No idea what stock part I used since I thought it was a match to the axle.  Went back to Minersville and got an adaptor, put it together, bled it, and just as I was about to pull off the trailer popped a front line.  it was a non-coated braided stainless and it rubbed through the stainless braid on my link.  bought a pair of lines from the park and now I have a spare too. yay.

ran the MC dry while bleeding the front (mechanic friend was watching it.  LOL.  at least he stayed though the ensuing nightmare.  Bled all the way around like 5 times, cracked the fittings at the master three times, and I think I still have air in my rear wheel ABS.  It's actuating when it shouldn't.  Had flares that didn't want to seal on the hard line going to the new front line too.  Thanks Wolfhope for the flare tool usage and company.

Finally had the brakes working well at 16:30 Saturday after leaving camp for parts at 09:15.  Waited for our group to come off the trail and left.

Thought I had a bad UJoint on the way back to camp.  Unlocked hubs to check, no change.  Forgot to snug lug nuts.  No damage.

Sunday driver's hub would not lock.  Threw tailgate open in frustration to get at tools to take it apart, and both tailgate cables fail.  Handle nails the hitch and breaks.  No body damage, just the handle.  Set the latches and use a strap the rest of the day since I don't want a nightmare to open it again.  Get hub locked.

Soon after, pass front coil retainer fails in the black/red rocks off O trail.  I clearly don't know how to weld Laughing.  Need to figure out how to get to the inside of the bucket since that's where it sees more load....  Straps fail to hold the coil so I pick up some nice BD on the driver rear from a tree that I was told I would not lean towards.  Pulled the tail light and would have broken it if I hadn't.  Use two axle straps and two shackles to limit passenger droop and retain the coil.  Hit up Lake Christy and the Quarry (but not any of the cool trails over there, I was done with blacks for the day) and I could not quite make the last step if the fun line from the bottom of the quarry.  could not get the passenger rear to climb the last big rock.

TJ on 38s never broke.  4:1 and a stick with 4.88s.  nice and light with the skinny pedal at all times.  seems to have bent a rear shaft slightly though.  I also found that I'm making a new track bar that is not adjustable and has no threads to fail, it has a strap wrapped around it now as insurance.  it had play when I checked my frontend leaving for the day and it got worse on the way home.  The ZJ bent his V8 tie rod but that was mostly straightened with a strong winch pull.  I finally bent my tie rod just a sneeze.  Nothing to even think about.  My driveshaft is still good despite more contact.  My tcase held together.  No steering issues to speak of aside from hot fluid.  My fan clutch is shot and a new one from NAPA was $75, so I'm going electric.  it's good enough with no A/C, so I just found out it was bad.  I've been without A/C for years and years.

My summer is looking both broke and full at this point, maybe a fall run?  Not sure how that works out with hunting season, and I imagine winter runs would be VERY hardcore.

We will be doing a few Ardbeg and Greens runs this year I am sure. I am headed up to Ardbeg this weekend with some of the guys. I am not into Rocks really, but I am more than willing to learn, I just want to play LOL! That thing looks HUGE man, how is it on Off Camber stuff?
Mr. Mindless

long wheelbase makes it real stable.  on topic: and the Scout steering box just makes it work great!

(maybe an admin should split this topic?  sorry for the hijack)
lostsoul

I will do it LOL!
Mr. Mindless

thumbup

so yeah...  I'm more into the rock thing than the mud thing but sloppy trails are fine.  I'd imagine that up north there's more than enough water out there to keep things interesting and that's fine.  I just hate when something breaks and my rig is packed with stinky sloppy shit Smile
lostsoul

LMFAO I Hear that. Last time I power washed mine good it took me over 2 hours. What have you go for gears in that thing?
Mr. Mindless

5.38s.  That's as deep as I can go with the 10.25 aside from a hard to find special service 7.17 that's just too deep.

I'd like to go to something like a 5.5 if I could but it turns about 2,000rpm down the road and that's fine - but hills in overdrive at 80kph sometimes need 3rd and that would be nice to get away from.  I get 14mpg taking it easy though.

Still running a stock 231HD tcase, so 2.72 low range.  That works real well 95% of the time.  I'd like to go to a stick trans and put a 2:1 205 behind a 2.72 range box but that will probably come along with a cab swap and loosing the bed.

I plan to stay street legal forever.
lostsoul

Nice, I cannot wait to see if perform. I need gears as I am only running with 4 little pissed off Hamsters under the hood, so I have to use torque.
Mr. Mindless

I'd like 4 buff ass diesel burning hamsters under the hood and turn that 14 into 25mpg.  sadly this truck is my only real tow rig too so when I need to go play 'fetch' with another vehicle I need all the ponies that 318 can make.  I don't know if I'd be happy with lower horsepower even with the torque in that circumstance.

A 4bt would make a nice swap but they are too noisy for a trail rig IMO.  A VW TDI won't cut it but I love them (have a 2002 TDI Jetta).  Solution is get a Sammi instead and put a 1.9 in it Smile

I have a long list of BS to fix after this last trip, and I may go to Rausch again on the 26-27 weekend, so I'll be keeping busy.  It seems like ever since I quit daily driving it, there's always some little shit going wrong.  Most everything that annoyed me this weekend I'd have caught ahead of time if I was driving it more than once a month but again with the 14mpg vs 46 or so....  Sucks when I drive at least 60 miles a day.
lostsoul

Hell I would love to drop a TDI in my Zuk.
Mr. Mindless

I wanna do it in something stupid, like an X90.  and run 38x12.5 SXs.  it'd be cool Smile
lostsoul

The Frog is currently on 38's and it is fun around here, the only reason I could see a need to go bigger is if it was a Dedicated Rock machine and the trails required it.
Mr. Mindless

I have no reason to be on 40s for what I do, aside from wheelbase/clearance.  there's nothing I run that really NEEDS more than 35s.  I have too much body for what there is that needs more.
scrappy

[quote="Mr. Mindless"]a Scout steering box just makes it work great!
KFM has one for sale cheep i think
Mr. Mindless

That's where this thread came from - split  from his for sale.
89lxstanger

so where are those pics from? looks liek ome good wheeling  when we going:D
lostsoul

Thanks for coming out Scoob, here's your sign.
Mr. Mindless

That's Rausch Creek.  Tremont, PA - probably around 7ish hours for you guys?

it would probably take ~4 days to see all of the park, I've been there probably close to a dozen times and there are still a handful of trails I have not run that I'd like to.  Mostly due to dragging someone on 31s through on half the trips, but it's just plain huge.  Bigger than Paragon was.

May be going down the last weekend in July again, and trying to settle on an August date as well, likely the 15-16 whatever weekend.  I'd be more than happy to show you guys around.  Hopefully after my truck starts behaving - which it's due for.

angry_trucker

Mr. Mindless

dry van?  what do you have for tiedowns?  It's a lot easier on a flatbed or dropdeck Smile

There was one there this weekend...
89lxstanger

haha thats awesome

gogle maps says 484km from my door to tremont pa
that would put me at around 5 hours  traffic and border crossing pending of course
Mr. Mindless

not really too bad.  there's free camping at the park too - but no night wheeling Sad
lostsoul

I like the sounds of this.
89lxstanger

indeed it does Smile
Mr. Mindless

looks like the next two times I'll be down there are July 27th and August 15th weekends if you want to plan something.

August 15th I'm trying to put together an organized run, details to follow shortly I hope.  Nor'Easter 2008.
