Ill be doing a solid axle swap soon on my new truck. My question is since the gearing on the dana 44 solid axle is different from my 8.8 can i take the ring and pinion out of the (1991) dana 44 IFS and swap it over to the dana 44 solid axle (1979)? Or should i just be regearing everything which i plan to do but don't have the cash at the moment. And if just regreared everything to 456 how would the truck be on the road pushing 33's? The plan was 456 grearing with 35's but once again i'm short for cash right now. |

There are Gear Calculators out there that would answer your questions as far as what gear for the tire, but the best bet is take the Factory tire size and gear and Cross multiply it against the new tire size, there is your ideal new ration. Mind you some of the calculators are far more indepth as they can provide RPM and other key factors for you as well. I am thinking you might have to get a real good look at the Crown and pinions out of those units to see if they will work, but my guess is there is a good chance it will work. |

Alright, i'm just thinking drop the solid axle in hopefully make the stock grearing work use stock coils and shocks then save up for 35's new grearing and a 6 inch super flex lift. |

If you are going 6" you might want to look at 36+ Tires man, you would have the room. |

I was thinking that but the money is becoming the biggest issue. And once i start getting over 35 i need to do more upgrades like chrome moly axles, yukon u-joints maybe a tranny rebuild to take the extra abuse and the truck will still be a daily driver as well. |

Well James, Cameron has been prostituting himself to fat old men to pay for the dolly, perhaps you could go into business with him and make enuff for your mods. |

James I have been informed that yes it will work, but you will need to run the 6" lift springs to clear the crossmember. |

I believe so, you'll just need a master install kit for bearings and shims and so forth. remember to set up used gears on the coast side.
4.56 and 33s should be a very good match with an overdrive transmission. Should still be okay when you move up to 35s, depends on your low range, what you wheel, and how you wheel. |
